Taupo 1000 race has been going for the past
fourteen years and is the longest OffRoad event
held in the Southern Hemisphere. This year
visiting Australian and American teams competed
for the title of best in their class.
This is the ultimate test of driver and machine,
race preparation and reliability, of teamwork
and luck of the day. The race is held over two
days, each consisting of 9 laps of a 56 km
course with a possible race distance of 1000km.
The race track,
like previous years uses the forestry blocks
north of the Napier Taupo Highway and consists
of a challenging mix of fast and slow, rough and
smooth forestry tracks, gravel roads, mud bogs
and the super-stage designed to give spectators
some thrilling viewing at the main jump. This
year there were three separate media production
companies filming for television so part of
entry was you gave permission to appear in any
one of these film productions.
Brigit covered the
two days racing and she had an awesome time. She
was more than happy to cruise around the pit
areas, tracks and the main jump because there
was plenty of action everywhere at this event.
There wasn't any quad bike racing for this event
so the kids told Brigit but that didn't stop
them putting on a show on their bikes and that
included some classic shots of the adults as
well. It was the best form of transport for this
event and Brigit even found a Harley to make her
day. She took that as a good omen for the day.
The race vehicles
came through each check point about every 40
minutes so Brigit found a couple favourite spots
and corners that worked for her. She had a few
problems with her camera the first day but we
got those sorted and we couldn't pry her off the
field on the second day.
Perseverance pays
off and like a bird watcher in her nest relaxing
back, Brigit began shooting the Lowery truck as
it came up to the corner and starts sliding
sideways in the very soft dirt. The truck looks
like it hits the side of the corner first.
Things can happen all so quickly and you know
when it's time to move your ass out of there in
a hurry when that vehicle starts rolling in a
direct line towards you. Nice shooting Brigit
and we're not sure who came and saw her from the
official ORANZ tent to thank her and keep up the
good work because this really made her day.
The photos for
this event are still being loaded into the
gallery as this is quite a large collection. We
are up to the second day now and thank you for
your patience.
Many Thanks to
